Project Back to Africa is a Bay Area community initiative organized by the San Francisco State University’s Black Student Union and I.T. Bookman Community Center. We are a group of African American students, community members and young professionals who are working together to arrive in Arusha, Tanzania in August 2014
Our Goal is to travel to Arusha, Tanzania to volunteer and explore the African country. As African Americans, a people who were taken from our native land, we feel that it is an essential component of our lives to have this experience.
During our 2 week stay in Tanzania, we will be working indivudually on Auto Ethnographies which is a written form of self expression within another culture.
We will then compile the pieces to construct a documentary which will be showcased at San Francisco State University and I.T. Bookman Community Center.
In addition to our documentary, we will also volunteer in the form of teaching, working on local projects, farming, participate in youth forums, visit the Massai and hike around Mt. Kilimanjaro.
In order to fund our trip we are undergoing a series of educational events, seminars and fundraisers. This trip is not just for us, it is for the greater community, including you! If you are able, please support our cause, or at least spread the word, as we are truly a grass roots project.
Peace,
Team of Project Back to Africa
