I look into my eyes
and see a past I never wanted.
Distance the pain!
..It’s too hot to touch.
I look in my eyes
And see a thousand and one sneers
A million tears..
And one sad, lonely, little child.
I look into my eyes and feel shame
For years of neglect,
For the trauma I foolishly collect
And hold too near a heart already so heavy.
I look into my eyes and know
Beauty waits to spring forth
Like the peace that naturally caresses
Waterfalls forgotten and fields untouched.
I look into my eyes and thank the ancestors who’ve guided me to love.
Ever patient,
Ever caring,
And ever present
